A few months ago, I wrote a long blog post about the end of Game of Thrones. Many writers, including myself, think that Game of Thrones truly missed the mark with its final two seasons. I could go into why here, but honestly, I think it's more important to move on. For an excellent example of how I feel about the last couple of seasons of Game of Thrones, I will instead give you this link to a YouTube video, which is an excellent explanations of the problems in those final two seasons. The idiocy in seasons 7 and 8 is astounding.

Game of Thrones S8E3 — An Unbridled Rage

However, I don't just want to write blog posts about things that suck, so I am going to stop talking about Game of Thrones.

What I want to talk about right now is Watchmen.

Watchmen is a new series on HBO. This excellent series incorporates not only excellent writing, but the acting is superb. Regina King deserves an Emmy to go with her Oscar for best actress that she won in 2018. What's more, the first three episodes that I have watched at this time seem to be the work of a more mature series. It usually takes several seasons for writers to get to know the actors that they are writing for and begin to trust which actors can handle subtle, difficult writing.

Regina King in Watchmen

Watchmen has, from the first episode, displayed the kind of nuanced writing that writers produce for trusted actors only after several seasons. Now, the writers do have some amazing actors cast in this show, but it usually takes longer than this for writers to really begin to release their best material to the actors.

But the writing is stellar. The amazing dialogue is filled with innuendo and back story, and the writers also give the actors space to respond not only with words that specifically denote what is happening, but they also leave space for the actors to use their craft to react and display emotion without dialogue getting in the way.

Some of the events in the series can be confusing. I recommend that, if you're going to watch it, you do just a little bit of background reading so that you understand why, for example, there are squidfalls, where living squids rain down on Tulsa, Oklahoma. I used to read comic books as a teenager, and I vaguely remember Watchmen. It's been a really long time. I did remember enough of the back story to be able to explain it to my husband. However, I hit a few links, and in 15 minutes, I was able to refresh myself to where I could watch the series easily.

Here's a link to get you up and going on the background of the created world in Watchmen.

POPSUGAR — the Watchmen Backstory

I was kind of worried about HBO after Game of Thrones ended, but I'm not anymore. I'm also looking forward to watching His Dark Materials, a steampunk fantasy series based on the novels by Philip Pullman. I have every intention of watching it. My husband just started watching Watchmen first, so we’re thoroughly engrossed in that right now.
